The Penguins of Martillo Island
I went to Martillo Island yesterday to see penguins. The island is home to something like 100,000 Magellan penguins and a smaller colony of Gentoo penguins. There is also a single pair of King penguins on the island this year – we saw the male (he was balancing an egg on his feet).
My tour transported us by bus to Harberton Ranch. Founded in 1886, it has a rather interesting history. It has a museum full of the bones of marine animals, and that was a rather interesting. Students volunteer on the ranch. They walk the beaches, find carcasses and bones, clean them and assemble them into skeletons to put on display.
On the ranch, there are also buildings full of antiques. They offer some baked goods made from produce grown on the ranch.

But really, I just wanted to see the penguins! We took a small boat from the ranch to Martillo Island where we spent about an hour walking amongst the many nests.
Honestly, I just forgot everything our tour guide said. Enjoy these pictures!
